Abstract

<PICT:0461411/III/1> Oil is extracted from fish and marine animal material by accumulating the unpulped material in a vessel, treating it with a preservative which is volatile at temperatures low enough to be non-destructive to the material, removing substantially all of the uncombined preservative from the material by heating, and while the material is still warm applying more heat to digest it, and finally separating solid from liquid constituents. Suitable preservatives are formaldehyde and acetaldehyde or their aqueous solutions, and chlorine. Raw fish material is loaded on to a conveyer 3 and charged into a bin 1, being treated in transit, if desired, by one or more volatile liquid preservatives from a tank 7 by means of a spray 9. Water from a tank 5 may also be added. Whether preservative has already been added or not, it may be supplied in gaseous form from a tank 8 via a diffusing outlet 12. The material in the bin 1, after accumulating for a period, is transferred into a cooker 14 where it is first heated to drive off the preservative which collects in a tank 17 and is then, without cooling, given additional heat to digest it. The digested material is transferred to a press 19, the liquid constituents thereof passing to a drip pan 20, and from thence to an oil-settling basin 23. Instead of the pressing step, the digestion step may be employed in the cooker long enough to complete digestion and to evaporate all the water, thereafter the oil being extracted by means of a solvent such as gasoline and naphtha. When employing formaldehyde or acetaldehyde as the preservative the material to be treated is preferably rendered neutral or slightly acid, for example by the addition of sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acid. Specifications 9773/01, [Class 91], 286,709, [Class 49], 378,399, and 461,343 are referred to.
