Abstract

466,227. Vehicle opening tops. JOHNSTON, G. W. P. Jan. 6, 1936, No. 467. [Class 108 (i)] In vehicles having a roof opening the sliding panel is operated by a pneumatic cylinder or device having a controlling valve and auxiliary pneumatic devices may be provided to secure the sliding panel in adjusted position. The sliding panel is secured to the end of a piston rod 9 operating in a cylinder 7 situated beneath the fixed part of the roof and auxiliary pneumatic cylinders 12 are situated at either side and provided with piston rods 14 for actuating the securing devices. The ends of the cylinder 7 are connected by ducts 10, 11 to a valve to which are also connected the ducts 21 of the auxiliary cylinders 12 and the vacuum or air-pressure supply duct 27. The rotary valve 25 is housed in a casing 24 and operated by a handle 37 and is provided with a port 33 by which the pressure, supplied by the duct 27, 28, is admitted to either end of the cylinder 7 by ducts 10, 11 to open or close the panel. When the handle 37 is placed or brought to mid or neutral position airpressure is communicated via port 33 and ducts 21 to the securing cylinders 12 the piston rods 14 of which are each connected to a bar 15 the arcuate movement of which, due to a link 16 and fixed pivot 17, causes a brake pad 20 to press against the side of the panel. The valve has an exhaust port 36 to release pressure from the cylinders as necessary. Specification 463,638 is referred to.
