Abstract

465,128. Chucks. FREEBOROUGH, A., and HALE, L. C. Nov. 1, 1935, No. 30172. [Class 83 (iii)] In a bevel closing advancing-jaw chuck, the jaws 16 slide in grooves 8 in the body 5 and are moved axially by a sleeve 12 having an inturned flange 15 engaging recesses 18 in the jaws. Axial motion of the sleeve 12 is produced by rotation thereof through a helical slot 13 therein engaging a pin 21, this pin passing completely through the sleeve and also serving to' attach an outer bevelled sleeve 19 rigidly to the body 5. The sleeve 12 may be rotated by means of a flange thereon extending beyond the rear end of the sleeve 19, or by means of a flange 9 located between a head 6 on the body and the end of the sleeve 19 and having a tongue and slot connection 10, 11 with the sleeve 12. The body is provided with a tapered squaresectioned recess 22 to engage and drive the tool shank positively. In a modification, the outer sleeve 19 may be bell-mouthed and the jaws closed by being drawn rearwardly into the sleeve.
