[Class 55 (i)] In a vertical carbonizing retort comprising a metallic part 7 forming a coke-cooling zone associated at its upper end with a masonry section and at its lower end with a fixed casing 10 forming a coke outlet, the metallic part is attached to girders 5 where it abuts against the masonry section and the lower end is free to move in relation to the casing 10 which carries an extractor 9 and outlet door 11, a gas-tight joint being provided between the free end of the metallic part and the casing 10. The latter with its driving mechanism is mounted on girders 14. The gas-tight joint may be arranged between the free end of the casing 7 and a rim 18, Fig. 3, on the girder structure 14, and consists of packing 19 positioned by a distance piece 21 and a cover plate 20. Additional packing 23 may be arranged between the end of the casing 7 and the supporting member 22 of the casing 10. The metal casing 7 is preferably composed of sections flanged at each end and to allow for the unequal expansion of the corresponding sections of brick lining 8, the latter are supported by projecting shelves 24 fixed between adjacent flanges of the metal sections. An enlarged edge 25 of the shelves locks the lining sections in position and spaces between adjoining brick sections permit of expansion.
