Abstract

458,701. Gear-cutting. SYKES, W. E., 33, Gates Circle, Buffalo, New York, U.S.A. Oct. 4, 1935, No. 27474. Convention date, Oct. 12, 1934. [Class 83 (iii)] The teeth of a tapered gear 57 particularly for connecting shafts arranged at small angles up to 10‹, are cut by means of a pinion cutter having its axis in a common plane with the blank arbor and fed towards the blank while it is reciprocated along a line determined by the desired root angle of the teeth. The cutting may be effected on a machine similar to that described in U.S.A. Specifications 1,750,029 and 1,750,030. The two pinion cutters 23, 24 are rotated from a gear-box 10 through bevel gearing 13, shaft 15, gearing 16, and worm gearing 21, 22, the cutters having a twisting movement for cutting double helical teeth imparted during their reciprocation by helical guides 26, 28. At the same time the cutters have a generating movement in unison with the blank rotation. The usual cutter relief is provided. The blank is rotated from the gearbox through a shaft 12, change gears 33, shaft 36 and worm gearing 37 and a universal joint which includes a centralizing ball socket 43 and interengaging crown gears 51, 54. The tail end of the blank arbor is supported on a ball 42 fixed to an adjustable slide 44. The invention is also applicable to cutting tapered single helical gears and tapered splines and may be applied to gear cutting machines of the rack type.
