[Class 83 (iv)] [See also Group I] A machine for binding packages with metal bands or wires comprises a base positioned on the package and provided with gripping and tensioning means and with one or more pairs of electric spot welding electrodes, the points of which are shrouded during welding so as to prevent sparks or molten metal from igniting combustible material in the vicinity. On the base 1, which may be flat or rounded, is mounted at one end a rotary spring-actuated eccentric claw 2 for clamping one end of the band and releasable by a lever 9. At the other end mounted on an eccentric 11 on a shaft 12 is a knurled tensioning wheel 4, which is brought into contact with the other end of the band, after it has been wound round the package, by operation of a thumb lever on the shaft 12, tensioning being then effected by rotating the wheel by a ratchet lever 17. The ends of the band are overlapped between the electrodes 27, 32 of a spot welding apparatus secured to the base, the first-mentioned end passing under and the second-mentioned end over an anvil 56. The fixed electrodes 32 are mounted in a fibre insulation pad 33 and are electrically connected by a strip 41 and lead 40 to the terminal 35. The electrodes 27 are carried by spring-retracted plungers 26, which reciprocate in an insulating block 23 secured in a rectangular cage 21 forming a slide, which is raised by springs 22 and is depressed by a cam 48 on a hand rotated shaft 43 through a bridge piece 54 supported by springs 55. The plungers, which are electrically connected by contact strips 37 and leads 36 to a terminal 34, are depressed successively to effect the welds, after the slide has been pressed into contact with the work, by a pair of cams 47, 49 on the shaft 43 through spring-controlled mushroom tappets 50. The lower end of the slide is provided with a fireproof pad 29 of fibre, wood or asbestos containing loose flanged sleeves 28 for shrouding the points of the movable electrodes, these sleeves engaging the lower ends of the plunger springs 25. One side 21b of the case projects below the base of the pad so that when the latter is pressed down it takes into a slot 1a in the base. An asbestos apron 10 also extends round the pad. Alongside the slide 21 is a shear blade 6, which is reciprocated by a cam 46 to sever the surplus part of the right hand end of the band prior to welding. Adjustable lateral stops 60, 61 are provided to suit bands of different sizes. Current is supplied through a switch which may be operated by an arm 58 on the cam-shaft through a Bowden control 57. In the case of a wire tie the electrodes may be V-grooved to form a grip device for holding the ends in contact during welding. According to the Provisional Specification the fixed electrode may consist of a thin-metal blade. Further, cutting may be effected simultaneously with or immediately after welding.
