Abstract

456,667. Electrically - propelled vehicles. HENNESSY, J. A., 9, Strand Street, Liverpool, and MYNNE, L. G., 41, Rosebery Avenue, Waterloo, near Liverpool. May 20, 1935, No. 14650. [Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iii), and 79 (v)] In an electrically - propelled mobile crane platform of the type provided at one end with a pair of wheels on a fixed axis and at the other end with a combined steering and driving wheel or wheels, the driving wheel or wheels 22 are carried by an axle 21 mounted in a casing 20 with a tubular extension 23 rotatable about a vertical axis in the platform frame 1, 6, an electric motor 35 being mounted above the extension and a driving shaft 32 directly coupled thereto extending through the extension into the casing wherein it is coupled by reduction and worm gearing 31, 29 to the wheel axle 21. The shaft 32 is mounted in the extension 23 in ball bearings 33, 34, the extension being provided with a thrust bearing 26 and its upper end being socketed in a bracket 27. The motor 35 is carried by a frame upright 36 and is controllable by a brake 37. Steering is effected from the driver's platform by means of a hand wheel 44 through a bevel geared shaft 41 engaging a gear 39 on the extension. The crane motor 8 and the motor 35 are energized by a storage battery 45 and are separately regulated to drive in either direction by controllers 9. If desired, the motor 35 may be carried on the end of the casing extension to rotate therewith. The Provisional Specification describes an arrangement wherein the worm shaft 30 extends through the tubular extension to the motor, mounted on the upper end thereof.
