Abstract
455,935. Transmitting-mechanism for brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION, 401, Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, U.S.A. June 4, 1935, No. 16078. Convention date, June 4, 1934. [Class 103 (i)] In a brake-operating mechanism for vehicles having four-wheel brakes actuated by operating connections individual to each brake, the connections engage a driver-operated means comprising two members secured to each other and angularly movable about the same vertical axis or shaft on which they are adapted to be mounted. The brakes are operated by steel cables 18 connected to the rotatable member and passing through Bowden-type conduits 20 between the frame and backing plates of the brakes. The operating member is formed by two flanged stampings 50, 52 secured to each other and mounted on the frame 16 by a central axis 34 and a second pivot 36 passing through an arcuate slot in the members 50, 52. An arm 42 secured to the members 50, 52 is connected to a cable 40 attached to a pedal and a further cable 44, secured to the flange of one of the members 50, 52, is operated from a hand-lever. Each of the cables 18, 44 is connected to the rotatable member by a channelled clip 46 engaging a circumferential slot in the flanges, the end of the cable being passed through the clip and being provided with an enlarged sleeve 48. The cables connected to the front and rear wheels are connected to the members 50, 52 and when the brakes are applied all wrap around the flanges of the drum member. Each brake is adjusted by means of its Bowden conduit 20, Fig. 4, the end adjacent the frame 16 carrying a threaded sleeve 24 passing through a bracket on the frame 16 and engaged on each side by adjusting nuts 26. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes an arrangement in which the two stampings 50, 52 are replaced by a single, flanged stamping. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
