Abstract

<PICT:0443008/III/1> A gas mixture containing sulphur dioxide and oxygen is introduced into a gas producer through a revolving grate, the sulphur, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, or other reducing gases formed being brought, while still hot, into contact with a further quantity of sulphur dioxide and then passed through two or more chambers containing a suitable contact material, said chambers being in series and at different temperatures. The gas mixture is preheated, fed to the producer 1, and the gases evolved mixed with further SO2 as in Specifications 426,456 and 437,236. The mixture then passes to a contact chamber 5 maintained for example at 700--1000 DEG C. After cooling in the preheater 4, it passes through a second chamber 6, at say 300--600 DEG C. and is then cooled to condense the sulphur, optionally after purifying from soot. Suitable catalysts consist wholly or in part, or are coated with iron or manganese or their compounds, preferably the hydrates such as bog ores or ferruginous bauxite. Aluminate cement, i.e. melted cement of high alumina content, preferably admixed with iron or manganese may also be used. Titanium compounds such as titanic acid may be used, especially at the lower temperatures, and alkali metal compounds such as soda, mainly at high temperatures. These latter compounds may be introduced into the producer where they are vaporized.
