Abstract

448,700. Weighing-apparatus. AVERY, Ltd., W. & T., SYKES, C. M., and BINNS, A., Soho Foundry, Birmingham. Dec. 12, 1934, No. 35651. [Class 143] Printed records, apparatus for giving.-In a printing and recording mechanism for weighing apparatus of the kind having a rotary dial weight-indicating mechanism, the printing and recording mechanism is driven by a motor and the operation of the motor is governed by a control means which can only be brought into action to establish a driving relationship between the motor and the printing and recording mechanism when the weighing apparatus is in a condition of equilibrium. The rotatable dial 41, Fig. 1, of the automatic weighing mechanism carries a type ring 40 situated between a printing plunger or hammer 34 and a platen, both actuated to obtain a record by a cam-shaft 29 driven from a motor 21. A major weight type wheel 61 is set through a rack-and-pinion mechanism by the movement of the handle controlling the addition of the capacity-increasing weights described in Specification 320,246, [Class 143]. The type wheel 61 is also controlled and accurately set according to the setting of the dial 41 by stepped portions thereon co-operating with a feeler lever 42 liberated by a cam on the cam shaft 29. An extension of the hammer-actuating lever 33 operates a printing totalizer of known kind. The printed record may be made simultaneously on an inserted ticket and on a paper ribbon 67, Fig. 3, fed forward within the casing by a step-by-step motion. The ticket slot is adjustable vertically by rack-and-pinion gearing controlled by a finger knob 70 so as to enable a number of records to be made on one ticket. A type wheel 72, Fig. 1, bearing code letters for printing on the ticket may be manually set by a knob 72<a>. The paper ribbon 67 and the inking tape 74 are fed by an eccentric and ratchet pawl mechanism operated from the cam-shaft 29, provision being made to maintain a uniform paper feed as the diameter of the take-up spool increases, and for reversing the movement of the inking tape when it reaches the end of its length. After inserting the ticket, and provided that the weighing mechanism is in equilibrium, a printing handle 115 may be rotated, causing a spring 113 to rotate a rock-shaft 107. The shaft draws down a striker rod 104, tilting a mercury switch and starting the motor 21, the word printing being at the same time caused to appear at a window. The movement of the rock-shaft 107 also allows the toothed end of a plunger 119, retarded by a dashpot, to pass through a gate carried by a lever 121<a> oscillated by the movements of the dashpot of the weighing mechanism. If the weighing mechanism is not at rest the toothed plunger fails to enter the gate and the striker rod 104 cannot start the motor to obtain the printed record. To ensure that the handle controlling the capacity weights is at a correct setting a strip 127 operatively connected to the handle is provided with a series of notches through one of which the plunger 119 must pass. The movement of the plunger allows a bell-crank lever 126 to engage locking teeth in the type ring 40. The starting of the motor 21 actuates the printing hammer and platen levers to effect the record on the paper and ticket. After the printing operation, the cam-shaft operates to open the mercury switch, stop the motor and permit the printing handle to return to normal position. Specifications and 276,076 and 338,996, [both in Class 143], also are referred to.
