Abstract

447,526. Preventing reverse movement of vehicles. GONARD, J. L., Hudson Terrace, Englewood Cliffs, Bergen, New Jersey, U.S.A. Aug. 30, 1935, No. 24286. [Class 103 (i)] One-way braking element for preventing reverse movement of a motor-vehicle operates on the gear-box main-shaft in forward speed and neutral and is put out of action by a lever having a pin-and-slot connection with the reverse and first speed gear shifting element when the gear lever is moved to reverse and remains out of action when moved to neutral after reverse and until the gear lever is moved to the first forward speed position and remains operative during all forward speed positions. A one way ball clutch comprising a ring gear 46 held against rotation in one direction by balls 69 in inclined slots in a fixed plate 47, meshes with a gear 45 fixed on the main shaft of the gear box which is always connected to the vehicle rear wheels. Plate 47 can be turned a small amount to put the rollers out of action and render the gear 46 free, by a yoke 80 operated by pin 85 and a cam slot 86 in a plate 87 slidable on rods 89, 100 in the top of the gear box. The plate 87 is adapted to be moved by a lever 93 mounted on a fixed pivot 94. The lever 93 is operated by a pin 102 engaging in a triangular opening 101 in the lever 93 and fixed to the gear shifter element 30 which is adapted to move the gears into low and reverse gear. In the position shown in Fig. 2, the gears have been moved to reverse position and the one way ball clutch 46 has been put out of action and the vehicle may move backwards. When the gear lever is moved to neutral position, the gear shifter element 30 is moved to the right to bring slots 111, 112 in the gear shifter elements 30, 32 in line and pin 102 moves along the side 104 of the opening 101 without moving the lever 93 so that the ball clutch 46 remains inoperative and the vehicle can still be moved backwards. When the gear lever is moved to low gear position the element 30 is moved further to the right and the pin 102 engages the side 105 moving the lever 93 so as to put the clutch 46 into operation. Movement of the shifter element back to neutral merely moves the pin 102 along the side 103 of the slot 101 without moving the lever 93. Further movement of the gear lever to move the element 32 for engaging second and top gear has no effect on the lever 93. A spring plunger 108 maintains the lever 93 in its two positions. The yoke 80 moves the rollers 69 into and out of operation by means of lugs 72, 74 fixed to plates on each side of the plate 47. The position of the plate 47 is adjustable.
