Abstract
446,901. Knitting-machines. HOLMES, H. H., and WILDT & CO., Ltd., Adelaide Works, Leicester. Nov. 2, 1934, No. 31545. [Class 74 (ii)] The pattern drum, trick wheel, &c. of a knitting-machine is racked back and forth, in accordance with the setting of a pattern chain &c., so that the pattern-forming effect is enhanced as compared with racking in one direction only. The invention is shown applied to a machine with stationary needlecylinder and having a trick wheel as described in Specification 267,876, [Class 74 (ii)]. Bits 11 replaceably mounted in the tricks of the 'wheel 10 are provided with butts 12 located at different levels in accordance with the pattern layout. These butts act on a stack of selecting cams 19, pivoted on a common shaft, and push in swinging members 15 associated with needle jacks 13, when suitably provided with butts 17. The unselected jacks are pushed up by a cam 24 rotating with the cam box. In addition to the pawl 28 for racking the wheel 10, when operated by arcuate slides 26, 27 under control of a pattern chain, there is a racking pawl 34 pivoted at 36 to a bell-crank 37 capable of being operated from the slide 26. This pawl racks the wheel 10 in the opposite direction to the pawl 28. A bluff plate 43 controlled by the pattern chain is rotated about the centre 35 to hold out whichever pawl is not required to act, or both pawls, as the case may be. This is done by a lift plate 50, similar to the slide 27, engaging, according to its vertical position, either a pin 51 or a cam 52 on the plate 43.
