Abstract

446,161. Fluid - pressure brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London.- (Assignees of Westinghouse Brake Co. of Australasia, Ltd. ; George Street, Concord West, Sydney, and White, J. ; 5, Edward Street, Concord, near Sydney, Australia. Nov. 4, 1935, No. 30476. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1934. [Class 103 (i)] Fluid-pressure brakes of the straight air type are controlled by an inertia device controlled by the fluid supplied to the brake cylinder from the train pipe by the driver's valve. The inertia device comprises a pendulum 27 pivoted at 30 and adapted to operate valves 35, 36, movement of which is opposed by springs 42, 43 acting on plungers 38, 39 on which also acts fluid under pressure supplied by pipes 40, 9, 10 from the driver's valve. The driver's valve supplies fluid by pipes 10, 9, 17, chamber 12 of valve 6 and pipe 7 to the brake cylinder. Fluid also passes through a restricted port 14 in the piston 11 of the valve 6 to chamber 13 and the piston 11 is maintained in its lowest position by an adjustable spring 20. When the brake is applied, if the resulting retardation is sufficiently great, the pendulum 27 swings and opens one of the valves 35, 36 according to direction of movement of the vehicle to release pressure fluid from above the piston 11 which rises and first closes the brake cylinder pipe 7 by means of slide valve 15 and then opens the brake cylinder to atmosphere at 19. As the braking effort is reduced, the valve 35 or 36 recloses and pressures above and below the piston 11 equalize and the slide valve and piston return to the lowest position again. The rate of retardation at which the pendulum swings and opens a valve 35 or 36 depends on the pressure of fluid admitted above the plungers 38, 39 by the driver's valve by the pipes 10, 9 supplying the brake cylinder. The inertia device is locked in central position when the brakes are released by a spring-plunger engaging an aperture in the lever 26. The plunger is released from the lever by a piston operated by the fluid supplied to the brake cylinder. The valve 6 may be held in lap position by a spring stop engaging the piston 11.
