Abstract

446,134. Hoods for vehicles and aircraft. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., Cranford Lane, Hayes, Middlesex, LOBELLE, M. J. O., 298, Langley Road, Langley, Bucking- hamshire, and ORDIDGE, F. H., Soircroft, Croft Gardens, and HOLROYD, F., Old Hatch Manor, both in Ruislip, Middlesex. April 23, 1935, No. 12246. [Class 4] [See also Group XXXII] A hood for aircraft, motor-boats, and land vehicles comprises a rigid frame, the upper part of which is provided with one or more panels of transparent flexible material, such as cellulose acetate, which are slidable to facilitate ingress and egress, and the lower part of which is provided with mechanical or hydraulic means whereby the hood may be raised and lowered. As shown, the hood comprises horizontal and vertical U-members a, b, the legs of the members b being formed with racks c which are operated from a crank g through bevel wheels e. A moulded glass panel h forms a windscreen and two panels j, beneath which is situated the pilot's seat, slide transversely in the members b. A frame k formed integrally with the members a, b holds a fixed transparent roof panel m and two hinged side panels n. A transparent flap o is hinged to the frame k and, when open, serves as a wind deflector and also permits an observer, seated below, to stand. The flap o may slide forwardly in guides and the fuselage is provided with a sliding window p. The flap o may be formed of bullet-proof material and form a shield for a gunner or observer. The racks may be operated by chain-and-spur gearing and the pilot's and observer's seats may be adjusted by mechanism interconnected with that for raising and lowering the hood. A slidable fillet (not shown), actuated by springs or by rack-and-pinion interconnected with the raising gear may be provided for closing the gap when the hood is raised; alternatively, the windscreen h may be formed integral with slidable frames and be moved to maintain contact with the fuselage. The panels may be replaced by a single panel. Nut-and-screw gear, link mechanism or hydraulic gear may replace the racks-and-pinions. In a modification, the hood is raised rearwardly and upwardly or forwardly and upwardly. Parts of the panels j may be made bullet-proof.
