Abstract
433,400. Rug needles. JONES, K. W., Ladock, Upper Mulgrave Road, Cheam, Surrey. June 19, 1934, No. 18117. [Class 112] A tufting needle for making rugs and the like has a fixed member co-operating with a sliding clutch member to grip the wool at certain points and stop the feed. In the form shown in the Figures, the stop is an inturned part 6 of the channel-shaped needle 1 and the clutch 5 is a sheet metal slider on the needle. In operation, the needle is threaded with wool 11 which passes through the eye 2, the clutch 5 being held to the rear of the depression 7 in the needle till the required length of wool has been pulled through the eye. The clutch is then released when the tension in the wool pulls it to the position shown in Fig. 5, holding the wool against further feed through the eye. The needle is pushed through the backing to make the first loop, the backing engaging the clutch and pushing it back to its wool-freeing position, the clutch being stopped by a rear-stop 9. The needle is then partly withdrawn, the free end of the wool being passed by the operator through the bight of wool between the backing and the eye, the withdrawal of the needle being then completed. The friction of the wool during withdrawal causes the tongue 8 of the clutch to nip the wool between itself and the stop 7 to pull tight the bight. The operation is then repeated. A second rear clutch may be provided to determine exactly the length of loop formed by each stroke of the needle.
