Abstract

Relates to material for surfacing roads, roofs, &c. of the type consisting of particles of aggregate coated with matrix-e.g. bitumen-and then mixed with aggregate of smaller particle size. According to the invention the matrix is sufficiently soft to be the equivalent of bitumen having a penetration greater than 350. The matrix may be tar, resinous and asphaltic materials, or petroleum or rosin distillation residues. The aggregate may be limestone, granite, slag, or clinker. In an example " 1/8 inch to dust" limestone is put through a 20 mesh sieve. The material retained on the screen is heated to 150 DEG F., treated with asphaltic or creosote oil, and mixed with 400-penetration bitumen at 210 to 250 DEG F.-i.e. flowable. The fines passing through the screen are then mixed in cold. The quantity of fines added equals that of the coarse aggregate. The bitumen used amounts to 6 per cent by weight of the total (coarse and fine) aggregate. Specifications 290,725, [Class 22], and 375,953 are referred to.
