Abstract
430,854. Gravity-separation apparatus. DAVIS, C., The Cedars, Redditch Road, King's Norton, Birmingham, and FARRER, W. G., The Ridge, Warwick Road, Solihull, near Birmingham. May 1, 1934, No. 13055. [Class 111] Means for discharging scum from a settling tank comprise a flexible or jointed pipe 8 with its open end 12 normally raised above the liquid level by a float 11 but depressed by a contact device 13 on a travelling structural, such as that of a rotary or reciprocating sludge-collector, which carries a scum plate 7 to direct the scum towards the wall of the tank for discharge through the pipe 8. The device is shown in combination with a rotary sludge collector, the bridge 1 of which has a driven shaft 6 with wheels 5 travelling on a rail on the wall 4 of the tank. The mouth of the pipe 8 is usually depressed as the bridge approaches the pipe, but a hand lever 20 and a link 18 may be provided to raise the contact device 13 to an inoperative position. Besides the scum-collecting plate 7 the bridge also carries a sweep 24 fixed on a vertical shaft 26 with its free end in contact with the end of the plate 7. As the bridge approaches the pipe 8 a toothed wheel 37 on a shaft 30 engages pins 38, forming a rack, on the tank wall and turns the shaft 26 by means of an intermediate toothed wheel and a toothed quadrant, so that the sweep 24 moves into the position shown in dotted lines and directs the scum into the pipe 8. A hand lever is provided for moving the intermediate toothed wheel into an inoperative position. The sweep 24 is returned to its normal position by a lever 43, when the latter contacts with a stop 44 on the tank wall.
