Abstract

Nov. 28, 1934, No. 34193. [Class 99 (ii)] [See also Group V] A composite pipe comprising a basic pipe 2 of metal, concrete &c., with an inner and /or an outer layer of natural or artificial asphaltic material, composed of bitumen in combination with mineral matter, is made by applying the asphaltic material to the basic pipe in a fine state of division or powder form and ramming, tamping or otherwise pressing it thereon. The tamping &c., of the asphalt is preferably effected by a vertically-movable packer-head comprising a rotary shaft 3, which carries round a plurality of sector arms 7 at such a speed that as the asphalt is poured into spaces 8 therebetween it is spread and forms a compressed layer, and a smoothing disc 6. Concrete pipes with an inner lining 10 may be made in a continuous operation, the concrete pipe being first formed within a mould 1 by a packerhead similar to but larger than that employed for the lining, and the lining then applied. Preferably the packerheads coact with a bed plate having four emplacements, viz. one for the erection of a mould, one for the making of the concrete pipe, the third for the lining operation, and the last for the stripping of the mould from the composite pipe. If desired metal reinforcement 11 is introduced into the concrete pipe after removal of the first packerhead, and filling material such as sand, powdered granite &c., may be added to the asphalt. The pipe may be provided with an outer layer of asphalt by applying the asphalt to the mould before the concrete.
