Dec. 15, 1933, No. 35400. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] Relates to blasting-cartridges of the kind comprising a gas-generating charge in a pressure resistant casing adapted to vent the gases at a certain pressure, for example by the shearing of a disc or the opening of a valve. According to the invention, the charge consists of solid materials comprising an incombustible composition capable of gas-evolving exothermic decomposition with an admixture of a small amount of non-detonating heating composition insufficient by itself to cause the venting of the casing. The gas-evolving composition may be in powder or granular form and may consist of ammonium nitrate, guanidine nitrate, urea nitrate, dicyandiamidine nitrate, or a mixture of ammonium nitrate with ammonium bicarbonate or oxalate. The heating composition is in the form of granules or flakes and may be black powder or cordite or the like, or mixtures of ammonium nitrate or other highly oxygenated substance and charcoal or other combustible material. The cartridge is only partly filled with the charge. Specification 397,203 is referred to.
