Abstract
Resinous substances similar to lac are manufactured by subjecting the husk residues of oil bearing fruits or seeds, after the extraction of the oil, to hydrolysis by means of a weak organic base, preferably one which is also capable of acting as a solvent for the resinous substance, e.g. aniline, toluidine, xylidine or pyridine. In an example, olive husks are ground and agitated with aniline at 105 DEG C., or the heated aniline is pumped through layers of the husks. The resulting solution is filtered and washed and the aniline is removed by vacuum distillation. The resin may be recovered from the still by means of water vapour, preferably after adding about 3 per cent of colophony. Reference is also made to the use of aqueous alkalies for the hydrolysis, in which case a salt is formed from which the resin must be liberated by means of acid.
