[Class 103 (v)] [See also Groups XXXI and XXV] Coupling means for road or rail vehicles comprises an universal joint or assemblage in association with slidable connections allowing horizontal transverse displacements with or without vertical or longitudinal displacements. A ball-and-socket connection 20, Fig. 3, may be associated with a transverse slidable connection 26, 28, wherein the opening in the guide plate 28 may be wider than the ball-stem 5 to allow vertical as well as horizontal displacements. Alternatively, Fig. 4, guideways 31, 32, at right angles may be provided, whilst the stem 5 may be spring-mounted. In another form, Fig. 6, (not shown), the slidable connections are interposed between the ball-and-socket parts and the stems 5, 6. In the form shown in Fig. 10, yokes 48, 49, at right angles are connected by a cross-shaped member 45, 46 providing for both pivotal and sliding movements. Alternatively, yokes may carry bars passing through a connecting block. In the form shown in Fig. 7, members 40, 42, slidable in guides at right angles in a connecting block 43, 44, are respectively connected to the stems 5, 6, by pivotal joints 37, 38, at right angles. The devices may be provided with lateral stops or return devices and with lubricating means.
