Abstract
Textile materials comprising yarns having a basis of a derivative of cellulose which have been subjected to a stretching and/or cr<\>zepe twisting operation in the presence of steam or hot water, are subjected to a mild treatment with solvents, swelling agents, or softening agents, such that the solvent, swelling agent, or softening agent does not completely penetrate the yarns or filaments. The agent may be applied in such small quantities that it does not penetrate to the core of the filaments, or the agent may be removed before it has had time to penetrate completely. Preferably the agents used are non-volatile and/or have a low softening power. Examples of suitable agents are thiocyanates, zinc chloride, lactic acids, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl lactate, diethyl tartrate, glycol mono-acetate, methyl or ethyl glycol mono-acetate, tetrachlorethane, trichlorethylene, dichlorethylene, phenols, and ethyl alcohol. The lustre of the filaments may be decreased, maintained, or increased according to whether the concentration of the solvent in the medium decreases, remains constant, or increases on removal. The treatment with the solvent or swelling agent may be applied at any stage after the cr<\>zepe-twisting or stretching operation. In an example, a cellulose acetate fabric containing a weft which has been cr<\>zepe-twisted in the presence of steam is scoured, padded with 10 per cent aqueous solution of formic acid (acetic acid, or glycol mono-acetate) and after about 30 seconds, thoroughly washed. In another example, a dry spun cellulose acetate yarn which has been stretched in the presence of steam or hot water is immersed for two minutes in a bath containing 80 per cent of tetrachlorethane and 20 per cent of toluene. In a modification, the stretched yarn is passed over a heated roller running in diethylene glycol at 105 DEG C., and then wiped and washed. The Provisional Specification refers also to the treatment of textile materials having a basis of regenerated cellulose. Specifications 407,359; 437,019, [Group IX]; 438,584, 438,585, 438,586, 438,587; 438,588, 438,589, 438,590, 438,591, 438,654, [all in Group IX]; 438,655, and 438,656 are referred to.
