Abstract

437,706. Indicating liquid levels. SARUCHANOFF, N., 17, Giesebrechtstrasse, Charlottenburg, Berlin. March 14, 1935, No. 7919. [Class 123 (i)] Apparatus for ascertaining the weight of the fluid contents of tanks or reservoirs, especially overground tanks, comprises a U-tube 8 containing mercury and connected with the tank 1 and with a compressed air pipe 14 which is connected through a manometer 22 with the air chamber of the tank, a relief cock 6 and drain cock 11 associated with the U-tube, and a zero-adjusting device 12 comprising a scale and a vernier slide which may be set to indicate the zero level of the mercury. The vertical arms of the U-tube are replaceable. In ascertaining the weight of the contents of the tank above a zero level N, N, the zero level of the mercury in the right-hand side of the U-tube 8 is first determined by disconnecting the pipe 16 in order to open the pipe 14 to the atmosphere, opening a slide valve 3, valve 4 and relief cock 6. When the fluid flows from the relief cock the valve 4 and cock 6 are closed and the height of the mercury is regarded as the zero level, the vernier 12 being adjusted to this level. The pipes 14, 16 are now connected and the valves 4, 17 are opened to oppose pressure air from a reservoir 18 to the pressure from the tank. When the mercury has fallen sufficiently the valve 17 is closed. An exhaust valve 15 is temporarily opened to allow gradual escape of air until the mercury rises to the zero level previously indicated by the vernier 12. At this point the manometer 22 is influenced at one side by the gaseous pressure from the top of the tank and at the other side by both the gaseous pressure and the liquid pressure, that is the manometer indicates the liquid pressure in the tank. The weight of liquid may then be calculated by formula. In a modification, in order to arrest the escape of air through the exhaust valve 15 automatically when the mercury rises to the zero level, a conducting rod is arranged above the mercury so as to close an electric circuit and cause an electromagnet to liberate the exhaust valve when the zero level is reached.
