Abstract
Beryllium minerals such as beryl are decomposed by heating the preferably finely powdered mineral with caustic alkalies in the initial presence of say 5--25 per cent of water to temperatures not exceeding 500 DEG C., say to 400 DEG C. About 16 mols of caustic soda per mol of beryl may be employed, and the alkali may be replaced by substances yielding it under the conditions of operation, for instance by trialkali phosphate. In a modification, the decomposition may be carried out in an autoclave, preferably with stirring, at 150--200 DEG C. After extraction of the decomposition product with water or aqueous alkali, the residue may be worked up by treatment with concentrated sulphuric acid. Silica may be removed by evaporation, the aluminium in the filtrate be precipitated as alum, and beryllium be precipitated as hydroxide by ammonia. Alternatively the aluminium, iron, and beryllium may all be precipitated as hydroxides, and the beryllium be recovered from the mixed precipitate by treatment with ammonium carbonate.
