Abstract
434,852. Typewriting paper. CALLAN, J. G., 24, Quincy Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Sept. 8, 1934, No. 25905. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1933. [Class 96] Paper 2 for typewriting use, has a surface coating 1 of uniform thickness of 1-2 tenths of a mil, following the irregularities of the paper surface and formed of material, e.g. casein, tanned glue, starch, &c., permeable to typewriter ink only after some time during which the typescript may readily be erased without using abrasive erasers, but after which the impression is relatively indelible. The coating is fragile enough to develop slight discontinuities on impact by the typewriter key. The coating is hardened with formaldehyde &c. and may contain sulphonated castor oil or soap, the latter ingredients may also occur in the typewriter ink. The paper may have had the usual rosin sizing at the beater, and the coating material may be applied cold, e.g. by a coating machine having a roller feed and rotary brushes. Initial drying is preferably effected at or below room temperature, e.g. the paper " floating " on a series of upwardly directed streams of air emerging from a blower-trunk of rectangular section. In an example, to make a coating composition, 1¢ lbs. of casein per gallon of water is soaked 1-2 hours, cooked, and cut with borax or ammonia, left 12 hours at room temperature, diluted with 20 gallons of water to 15 of solution, and 2 quarts of 50 per cent formaldehyde and colour and china clay are added.
