Abstract

423,058. Cycle driving mechanism. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and WOOD, A. E., Armoury Road, Small Heath, Birmingham. Nov. 10, 1933, No. 31327. [Class 136 (ii)] In a hub for cycles &c. of the type comprising a concentric driving-member provided with a screw-thread on which is mounted a longitudinally-movable clutch nut adapted to provide a forward drive and a free-wheel, a fixedwheel drive is provided by means of a longitudinally-slidable clutch member adapted, under the control of a hand-lever &c., to be brought into engagement with clutch teeth or dogs on the clutch nut when the latter is in complete driving engagement with the hub, the clutch mechanism not being engageable to provide a fixed-wheel drive when the rider is free-wheeling. As shown, the mechanism is applied to a hub having a two-speed epicyclic gear of known type. The driving-member 9, which is driven from the sprocket wheel 5 either direct or through the epicyclic gearing, is provided with a screw-thread for engagement with a clutch nut 16 adapted on forward driving to rotate the hub 1 through clutch teeth 17, 18, which become disengaged on free-wheeling. A clutch member 20 is keyed to the end of the driving-member 9 so as to slide thereon, and is provided with teeth 21 so arranged as to be adapted to engage teeth 22 on the clutch nut 16, when the teeth 17, 18 are engaged for forward driving, thus producing a fixed-wheel drive. The clutch member 20 is engaged by a cross-pin 24 secured to a sliding rod 23 connected to a control lever &c. on the handle-bar &c., movement of the clutch into the engaging position being effected by a spring 26.
