[Class 100 (iv)] [See also Group XL] Case-shift mechanism.-In a type-printing telegraph system in which the case of a character is determined by one or more impulses of a signal combination and in which the caseshift is effected independently of the reception of the complete combination of impulses, the change-over from one group of types to the other is effected by a mechanical arrangement operated by a rotating shaft. As shown, a cam 3 on a rotating shaft 2 moves the first selector bar 4 in an anticlockwise direction to a position in which it is latched or released by the armature 5 of the receiving magnet in accordance with the nature of the first impulse which is arranged to control the case group. The bar 4 controls a lever 6 selectively positioning a member 7 with respect to detents 11, 12. During the rotation of the shaft 1, and immediately after the printing of the preceding character, a cam 8 actuates an arm 9 which moves an arm 10 upwardly to engage one of the detents 11, 12 (if a case-shift operation is necessary) thereby releasing a clutch member 13 for half a revolution. An eccentric cam 15 secured to the clutch member 13 is associated with a lever 16 carrying a pivoted horizontal rod 17. When the cam 15 rotates from the position shown an inclined projection on the bar 17 as it moves to the right allows a lever 20 carrying the shaft 22 to drop vertically so that the tape drum 21 co-operates with one of the two rows of type. In a modified arrangement Fig. 2 (not shown), the cam 8 of the arrangement shown causes a selectively positioned interponent to engage one or the other of two bent levers which effect directly the lateral movement of the lever 17 and the consequent vertical movement of the tape drum 21 relative to the type-wheels or rows of type.
