Abstract

421,400. Conical valves. CARPENTER, P., 14, East Jackson Boulevard, Chicago, U.S.A.. March 18, 1933, No. 8286. [Class 135] [See also Group XXXIV] In a tapered plug valve, the plug 15 and casing 5, have, at one end at least, cylindrical portions 16, 12, of substantially the same diameter as that of the conical part to which it is adjacent, and one or more lubricant passages 22-24 introduce lubricant to one or more lubricant channels formed in the casing and /or plug member, and positioned at the junction of the tapered and cylindrical portions. As shown, both plug and casing have annular channels 11, 19, 13, 20, which are supplied, through the passages 22, 24, from a chamber 21 in the plug 15. The chamber 21 has a screwed plunger 33 for putting the lubricant under pressure to move the plug 15 axially of its seat against the action of a spring 31. The annular channels 11, 19, 13, 20, extend in part beyond the tapered surface of the plug member or casing. Lubricant leakage at the ends of the valve is prevented by packing 35, 29, engaging the cylindrical parts of the plug and compressed by a gland 36 and cover 26 respectively. In a modification, the annular channels are formed wholly in the plug, and in another modification, they are formed wholly in the casing.
