Abstract

420,427. Concentrating coal. VOOYS, G. J. DE, Huckelhoven, Erkelenz, Germany. May 24, 1933, No. 28743/34. Divided out of and addition to 420,367 under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 5, 1933. [Class 82 (ii)] Apparatus for concentrating coal by the process described in the parent Specification, using a sludge of clay and barytes as the concentrating liquid, comprises a vessel 1 containing the concentrating liquid connected at the bottom to a bucket conveyer housing in which a conveyer 9 works to remove the gangue. A circulation is produced by withdrawing liquid both from the top of vessel 1 and from the conveyer housing and returning it to the vessel 1 through openings 11 so that an upward current is produced above the openings and a downward current below the openings. The floating coal is removed by means of a rake conveyer 5 which carries the coal along an extension 19 and then over a draining screen through which the liquid passes into a hopper 6 from which it is returned to the vessel 1. The rake conveyer is guided by strips 15 so that the rakes gradually dip more deeply into the liquid as they cross the bath. At the discharge point 17 the rakes are guided horizontally by the extension 19, and a grate 20, which may be made of wood and mounted so that it can swing or which may be made of rubber, is positioned in front of the outlet point to prevent the jamming together of the particles of coal. The vessel 1 is made with very steep walls and is joined at the bottom to the bucket conveyer housing in such a way that no particles can drop past the buckets or get fixed at the point where the vessel and the housing join. For this purpose the join is made as a sharp edge 23 and the buckets travel close to the opening 22. Above the edge 23 the conveyer housing is enlarged so that any particles of coal can float up. Liquid, together with any particles of coal, overflows at the point 24, the coal is removed by a rake or the like, and the liquid returned, together with liquid from an overflow in the vessel 1, to the openings 11.
