[Class 6 (i)] Apparatus for distributing sand, ashes, chippings, grit, &c. by centrifugal force from a road roller, motor-car, waggon, tramway car, locomotive, or other vehicle comprises a grit receptacle on the vehicle, a conveyer for elevating the grit from the receptacle and discharging it into a shoot, one or more horizontal rotary distributers fed by the shoot and located forwardly of the front wheels of the vehicle, a slide or door associated with each of the distributers for controlling the direction of discharge, and mechanically or electrically operated means for driving the rotary distributers. A frame 3 carrying the distributers 2 is coupled to the chassis by a single bolt 3a on each side passing through bosses 3b on the framework and through the side bars 4a of the chassis, stays 5 being provided. The bosses 3b have small bearing faces against the bars 4a so that the frame 3 may not be affected materially by twisting of the chassis ; and the bars 4a may be slotted for the passage of the bolts to allow of slight independent movement. The supply shoot 8 ends in a junction box communicating with two nozzles 10 leading to the distributers, an adjustable plate being mounted in the box for regulating the supply to the nozzles. The frame of the endless conveyer 15 for delivering the grit to the shoot 8 is pivoted on a shaft 19 so that it may adjust itself to the level of the grit. The floor 21 of the receptacle 9 may be inclined. Each distributer may comprise a stationary upper plate 22 having a central inlet opening 26 and a pendant side wall around half its circumference and located above a rotary plate 25 provided with curved radiating vanes 24 which do not meet at the centre. The direction of discharge is regulated by moving a slide 28 around the distributer. Compressed air or other forced draught may be employed to assist the distribution. The rotary plates 25 may be geared together and driven from the vehicle gear box through a side shaft, bevel, spur, and chain gearing and a clutch. An auxiliary gear box may be provided to transmit different speeds. The elevator 15 is driven from the side shaft through chain gearing. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the distributers are driven by electric motors 47 through gearing 48, 49, the motors being mounted on the frame 3 and controlled by a variable-speed switch. The rotary plates may be bolted to tapering shoulders 50 on the shafts 6 of the distributers. The elevator 15 may be driven from an electric motor below the receptacle 9, the elevator entering a well in the receptacle and being fixed in position. According to the Provisional Specification the rotary distributers may be arranged at the side or rear of the vehicle.
