Abstract
427,509. Discharge apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London.-(Assignees of Haines, D. G. ; 34, Ella Street, Bloomfield, and Headrick, L. B. ; 26, Winans Street, East Orange, both in New Jersey, U.S.A.) May 15, 1934, Nos. 14672 and 14673. Convention dates, May 30, 1933. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] A tube comprises a target formed of a plurality of sections of materials having differing secondary electron emissive properties and means for causing the electron stream to traverse the target. In one form, a tube suitable for use in a frequency-multiplying circuit comprises a straight cathode 1, a shield 2, an accelerator grid 3 to which modulation signals may be applied, an apertured anode 4, a pair of deflector plates 6, 7 an anode structure 8 and an auxiliary anode 11. The structure 8 consists of rectangular strips 9 of nickel or the alloy known under the Registered Trade Mark " Nichrome," which are carbonized and are welded to a nickel mesh 10. The auxiliary anode may consist of nickel sheet which is pertused from the back and backed by another nickel sheet. As the beam is deflected across the anode 8, the current to the anode will be alternately high and low, whereas the current to the auxiliary anode will be alternately low and high. In a modification, a circular target may be divided into a number of sectors having different secondary emitting powers. The beam is then given a circular deflection. In another modification, a target consists of alternate strips of materials such as a carbonized nickel or carbonized nichrome and bright nickel or untreated copper and is mounted at the end of a conical cathode-ray tube. A silver coating on the conical wall receives the secondary electrons emitted and is connected to the cathode of an amplifier valve to the grid of which the target is connected. Electromagnetic deflection may be substituted for deflecting plates in each case. Curves are given showing the secondary emitting properties of zirconium sheet, bright nickel mesh on nickel bright nickel sheet, nichrome fired at 1000‹ C, in hydrogen, carbonized nickel, carbonized nichrome, copper sheet and sand-blasted molybdenum.
