Abstract
<PICT:0427396/III/1> <PICT:0427396/III/2> In the production of carbon black by decomposition of carbon monoxide at about 400 DEG C., in presence of a catalyst such as iron oxide (Fe2O3), the gas is passed upwards through a reaction vessel at a speed less than that which is sufficient to carry away the carbon at the same rate as it is formed, the accumulated carbon is kept agitated, and is subsequently removed by increasing the speed of the gas above this rate. The gas which may be preheated to 500 DEG C., enters by a pipe 4 at the base of the reaction vessel 1 and leaves by a pipe 6 containing a regulating valve 6<1> to a separator 14. Catalyst is supplied through an inlet 5. The reaction chamber may be fitted with a jacket for circulation of superheated steam at 700 DEG C., or combustion gases to start the reaction or of cool air or gas to carry away the heat of reaction. The gas may be passed down through a central tube surrounding a rotary shaft carrying a nozzle which serves as an injector and agitating vanes at the base of the chamber. Agitation may also be effected by varying the pressure of the gas. Passage of pure carbon monoxide may be alternated with passage of producer gas or other industrial gas containing a high proportion of carbon monoxide. The reaction with pure carbon monoxide may be effected in a narrow reaction chamber 2<1>, Fig. 5, supplied with gas and catalyst by a pipe 4<1>, the carbon and catalyst being carried by the gas into a wider chamber 2<2> supplied with industrial gas by a concentric pipe 4<2>.
