Abstract
427,121. Stays ; door - operating mechanism; hinges. LOUKS, W. H., 15, Brecon Road, Handsworth, Birmingham. Oct. 26, 1933, Nos. 29658/33 and 30459/34. [Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii)] A stay, or linkage for a spring door-closing device, comprising two arms pivoted together at one end and connected respectively to the door or the like and its frame at the other, has clutch means, at one of the pivots, brought into action, when the door has been opened to a predetermined position, to hold the door frictionally, by a projection on one clutch member engaging a similar projection on the pivot pin, which is adjustably fixed relatively to the other clutch member. Fig. 3 shows a joint between two arms 11, 13, the latter having a frusto-conical part 13<a> fitting in a corresponding part 11<a> of the other, the parts being held together loosely by a hollow-headed pivot pin 14 which is clamped to the member 13 in any desired position by a nut 16 with a serrated washer. The clutch members 11<a>, 13<a> are normally kept apart by a spring 18, but after a certain movement of the arms 11, 13 two inclined projections 14<e> inside the head of the pin 14 engage corresponding projections 11<e> on the part 11<a> and force the latter down into frictional engagement with the part 13<a>. The position at which this occurs is determined. by the initial position of the pin 14 relative to the arm 11 ; the parts 11<a> and the head of the pin 14 may be graduated to show how the pin should be set for any desired opening. The arrangement of one pair of projections 11<e>, 14e near the pivot axis and the other further away allows of movement through more than 180‹ if desired. In a modification, the clutch members may have flat engaging faces. One or each of the arms 11, 13 may be adjustable in length.
