Abstract

426,988. Fabrics composed of agglutinated fibres, cords, &c. McKAY, R. F., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham.-(International Latex Processes, Ltd.; 10, Lefebvre Street, St. Peter's Port, Guernsey) June 5, 1934, No. 16681. [Class 140] Flexible sheet material simulating a woven fabric is made by perforating at spaced intervals a sheet formed from loose fibres, threads, yarns, rovings, &c. arranged at different angles, and uniting the fibres &c. in the vicinity of the perforations by adhesive. The sheet may be formed from a number of layers of fibres &c., and some or all of the layers may consist of parallel fibres or of yarns, cords &c. Layers 1, 2 of parallel fibres disposed at right angles are assembled between perforated metal or wire screens 11, 12 and are perforated by pins 13 which pass through the screens into a bath 14 of adhesive, which is wiped off on the fibres as the pins are withdrawn. Endless screens may be used, a continuous layer of carded &c. fibres being deposited on the lower screen, and an upper layer of cut lengths of another carded web laid on at right angles by hand or by machine e.g. as in Specification 224,253, [Class 140]. Adhesive may be sprayed on the first layer before the second is applied, and, if, desired also on the second layer, the perforating pins being then applied with or without binder. Alternatively the adhesive may be sprayed on after perforating. Jute, istle, sisal, manilla, cotton, flax, &c., fibres may be used, and the binder may comprise rubber cement, rubber dispersion, or latex, asphalt, bitumen, &c., resins, shellac, glue, gums, starch, cellulose lacquers, &c. The material, which has a diagonal stretch, may be used as a burlap substitute, or a backing for oil cloth, artificial leather, &c.
