[Class 52 (ii)] An adjustable chair, primarily intended for use in determining the most comfortable shape and dimensions of a chair for a particular user, comprises a frame, movable elements constituting the seat, back and legs, and preferably the arm-rests, and a series of mechanisms by means of which these elements may be independently adjusted, one or more of the adjusting means comprising a rack or racks engaged by a pinion or pinions. The chair comprises a frame having a seat 1, legs 6, a back 15 and arm-rests 23. The seat 1 is preferably a box-spring frame slidable between side frames and horizontally adjustable by means of pinions 3 which mesh with racks 2 on the seat, the pinions being rotated by a handle 5. To adjust the inclination of the seat, the legs are provided with separate portions 7 movable in slots in the side frames and adjustable by rack and pinion mechanism. The back 15 is hinged at 16 to the frame, and is adjusted angularly by screwed rods 18 which screw into internally threaded sleeves 17 pivotally mounted on each side of the frame. Sprockets 20 on the rods 18 on each side are connected by a chain 21. The arm-rests 23 are raised and lowered by means of an internally threaded sleeve 24 and a screwed rod 25 which is rotated by means of bevel gearing. The movable arm-rests are attached to a stationary member 30 of the frame by two pairs of toggle levers 31 with friction pivots, so that the inclination of the arm-rests may be adjusted.
