[Class 130] In the production of filter-tip or like cigarettes, a continuous filling is cut at spaced positions and the lengths of filling so formed are separated bodily from one another to leave spaces for the reception of insertions, the spaced lengths of filling being enclosed in a paper tube. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 4, a pair of reciprocating grippers having jaws 13, 14 and 15, 16 are inserted between the tobacco filling and the paper strip or band. The grippers are carried by carriages 19, 20 which slide on parallel rods 21, and at the commencement of the forward movement of the carriages a bar 25 is raised into engagement with a lever 24 to close the jaws 13, 14 and 15, 16 and lift the filling while a rotating or oscillating knife 26 severs it. The carriage 19 is then accelerated to carry the cut length forward to form a space, and the bar 25 is lowered to enable the grippers to release the filling. The carriages 19, 20 are then returned to their initial positions. In modifications, (1) the forward movement of the cut length is effected by a separate blade after the grippers have released it ; (2) the gripper jaws 15, 16 are dispensed with, and the knife or a separate blade remains in engagement with the cut end of the continuous filling while the cut length is moved forward; and (3) the continuous forward movement of the filling is interrupted whilst the cutting and /or space-forming operations are carried out. The cigarettes produced may have an insertion in an intermediate position in the length of the cigarette, and the insertion may consist of cottonwool or a different kind of tobacco. The Provisional Specification states also that, after cutting the filling, parting-blades are applied at the line of division, one retaining the cut edge, while the other moves the severed length forwards.
