Abstract

426,777. Tools for dismantling &c. shock - absorbers. MARX & TRAUBE GES., 75, Gutleutstrasse, Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. Oct. 25, 1934, No. 30559. Convention date, June 1. [Class 61 (ii)] A tool for dismantling and assembling shock - absorbers of the type shown in the drawing, is shown in position on a shock absorber during dismantling ; the fluid casing not being shown and a valve in a piston 5 being out of sight. The shockabsorber itself acts by transmitting the shock from the vehicle wheel through a rocker lever to a disc 2b, on which one end of a spring 1 bears, the other end bearing against a disc 2a. The disc 2b is attached to the piston 5, which compresses liquid in a chamber 1<a>, and forces it partly through a valve in the piston and partly through a valve 4 into a casing, which envelops the shock absorbing elements. When the vehicle falls into a cavity the reverse action results. To dismantle, a casing 9 is put into position as shown, the casing having jaws 9<a> working in inclined slots and capable of engaging between the convolutions of the spring. By means of a mechanical device such as a screw 13 a plate 13a is forced downwardly compressing the spring, which has been previously anchored at one end by the jaws 9a, and forcing downwards the cylinder and piston so that the disc 2b is out of the way for the engagement of a spring locking ring 8 with a suitable tool such as tongs 14. By freeing the spring ring from a groove in the cylinder the shock absorber may be dismantled. Hydraulic or other means may be employed in lieu of the screw press.
