Abstract
426,635. Setting tubular rivets. HUXON HOLDING CORPORATION, 541, Lincoln Road, Grosse Pointe Village, Michigan, U.S.A. Oct. 2, 1933, No. 27041. Convention date, Oct. 6, 1932. [Class 43] A machine for setting rivets of the type comprising a tubular member 12, Figs. 13 and 15, and a headed pin 16 extending therethrough is provided with fluidpressure-operatedmeans for gripping and pulling the pin to cause upsetting of the tubular member intermediate its ends while a reactionary force is applied to the latter. Similarly operated means are provided for applying a reactionary force after upsetting, and whilst the pin is still under tension, at a different point of the member 12 so as to lock the pin to the tubular member. The pin portion 18 extending beyond the head of the rivet is broken off after the upsetting operation. The machine comprises a casting 23, Fig. 1, having passages 25, 26 communicating with air and oil pressure lines 33, 34 respectively and with the interior of a cylinder 32 which has a central dividing wall 46 and accommodates two pistons 41, 42. Both pistons are provided with air vents 50 which communicate with a longitudinal aperture, open to the atmosphere, in a piston rod 43 associated with the piston 41, the former directly and the latter indirectly through passages 54, 55<1>. The piston-rod 43 is connected to a tubular member 56 which in turn is threaded to a sleeve 57 provided at its outer end with three tapered sockets to accommodate gripping jaws 64. The latter are connected to a tubular pin 68 which is slidably mounted within the member 56 and is urged towards the end of the sleeve 57 by a spring 70 to cause the jaws to grip the pin 16 of the rivet. The piston 42 is slidably mounted in the piston rod 43 and is formed with a sleeve 55 which is connected to a member 87 slidably mounted in a tubular casing 85 secured to the cylinder wall 45. The member 87 has three radial projections 89 spaced equally circumferentially and adapted to move longitudinally between similarly spaced projections 90 on the wall 45. The projections 89, 90 are formed with hook-like portions to permit either set thereof being engaged by similarly formed members at the inner ends of sleeves 94, 95 which are slidably and rotatably mounted in the casing 85 and are slidable one within the other. The sleeve 95 carries at its outer end an anvil 107 having a tubular portion for engagement with the head of the rivet whilst the sleeve 94 carries a secondary anvil 110 having a bevelled portion 112 which is adapted to slide over and contract the rivet head 13. One or other of the sleeves 94, 95 may be connected to the movable member 87 by withdrawal of a set screw and rotation of both sleeves through 60, the hooks of the other sleeve engaging automatically with the stationary hooks 90 which thereafter prevent its movement. While the machine is inoperative, air under pressure may flow through passages 25, 30 and ball valve 31 into the bore 39 of the cylinder and through a passage 401 to the box 40 but, on applying pressure to a trigger 27, a valve 28 is opened and the air is free to pass to atmosphere through a port 29. The reduction in pressure in the air line 33 so operates valve mechanism 38 that a piston in the cylinder 35 and a plunger in barrel 35 move to the left and cause oil to flow under pressure through passage 26 into the compartment 39 of the cylinder. This causes the piston 41 to move to the right carrying with it the sleeve 67 and the pin 16 which is gripped by the jaws 64, the reactionary force to the pull being directed against the head 13 of the rivet by the anvil 107, which, in the setting of a rivet shown in Figs. 1 and 13, is held against movement by the hooks of the cylinder wall 45. The completion of the head 21, Fig. 13, produces an increase in oil pressure sufficient to open a valve 122 and admit the fluid to the cylinder 40, whereupon the piston 42 and the sleeve 94 are moved to the left so as to cause the anvil 110 to grip and contract the head of the rivet into locking engagement with the grooved portion of the pin 16. The pin is subsequently broken at the neck 20 and passes down through the piston rod 51. When the piston rod 51 engages the lever 144, the trigger 27 is automatically released, if not previously released by the operator. In setting a rivet in which the tubular member has a countersunk head 150, Fig. 15, the pin is locked to the tubular member by forcing a ring 153 into a groove formed in the interior of the latter and into engagement with the threads 154 on the pin. This is effected by substituting anvils 160, 161, Fig. 9, for the anvils 107, 110 shown in Fig. 1 and connecting the sleeve 95 to the slidably mounted member 87 associated with the piston 42.
