426,279. Measures of length. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.- (Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitõts-Ges.; 2, Friedrich Karl-Ufer, Berlin) Dec. 5, 1933, No. 34195. Convention date, Dec. 5, 1932. [Class 106 (ii)] An object, such as a rail is moved over a roller 3 so that its front end interrupts a pencil of light rays 6 directed on to a light sensitive electric cell 7, a counting mechanism being energized by the cell current during darkening of the cell by passage of the object. In the example shown, the light source 5 is arranged within a peripheral slot 4 of the roller 3. When the pencil 6 is interrupted, a relay 13 is energized through the amplifier valve 8 and switches in a revolution counter on the roller 3 which is again switched out when the darkening of the cell ceases. If the rail 1 is moved with a constant speed, a time counting mechanism may be provided in the anode circuit of the valve 8 instead of the relay 13. As shown, the anode and grid voltages are alternating. Both voltages and the heating current may be taken from a transformer 9. A capacity may be substituted for the high resistance 15 so that the phase of the grid pressure may be altered by the photo-cell.
