Abstract
Silicious materials containing free silica such as quartzites are calcined at temperatures of 1500 DEG C. or higher, but below the fusion temperature to convert the silica into a stable allotropic variety such as tridymite in furnaces in which they are subjected to constant agitation. The product is used for producing refractories, bricks, &c. A rotary furnace is preferably employed, but furnaces equipped with agitating arms may also be used. Those parts of the furnace in contact with the charge, including any agitating mechanism may be lagged with fire-proof materials made from the calcined silicious products themselves.
