Abstract
424,914. Reciprocating-saw apparatus. DEAN, W. H., 18, Cleveland Avenue, Darling- ton. Dec. 1, 1933, Nos. 33813/33 and 9326/34. [Class 145 (ii)] [See also Groups XXII, XXVI, and XXXIV] A power-actuated reciprocating hand-tool comprises a saw blade a, Fig. 4, or file, secured at its ends to blocks c reciprocably mounted in handles d, the blocks c being urged to the open ends of the handles d by springs e. Flexible steel cables f are connected at one end to the blocks c and at the other end to a crank pin provided on a flywheel mounted on the shaft of an electric motor o, Fig. 1, internal-combustion engine or compressed air motor ; the flywheel has a shrunk-on rim of aluminium. The cables f are enclosed in flexible non- reciprocating sheaths p, the ends of which abut against the handles d and against the casing q enclosing the reciprocating mechanism. This casing constitutes an oil reservoir, the oil being impelled by the flywheel into the sheaths p which are enclosed in flexible tubes r ; oil enters the handles d to lubricate the blocks c. A projection s, Fig. 4, on one block c enters a slot d<2> in the handle d to prevent rotation of the block in the handle whereby the cut can be controlled by rotating the handle. The handles d are provided at their ends with a ring u and an apertured cone t<2> respectively, which are held against the work to guide the tool ; the face u may be arranged at 45‹ for bevelling. A modification comprises a single handle d, Fig. 7, containing a spring-pressed block c carrying the tool a<1> and reciprocated as described above by a sheathed flexible cable f. The block d is prevented from rotating in the handle c ; a screw mounted in the handle d can be projected inwards to limit the forward stroke of the block d, and eventually to prevent the latter from moving from its rearmost position ; the tool a<1> can thus be removed without stopping the driving mechanism. The handle d carries an apertured cone member t<1>.
