Abstract

411,428. Carpet-sweepers and the like. FRENCH, J., 245, West 107th Street, Manhattan, New York, U.S.A. Oct. 4, 1932, No. 27469. Convention date, Oct. 20, 1931. [Class 138 (i).] A sweeper or like surface treating device comprising a casing, a rotatable brush or like implement enclosed therein connected with traction wheels, has an opening in the upper portion of the casing overhanging the brush and a dustpan removably inserted in the opening. The invention is particularly applicable to a sweeper of the type described in Specification 411,449 having two cleaning elements 24, 25 which may be brushes having different characteristics, a stiff brush 24 for carpets and a soft one 25 for sweeping hard surfaces, or the treating implements may be for polishing, dressing or otherwise treating floors or the like. A dustpan 35 can be removed and replaced through the top of the casing 1. The rotary brushes 24, 25 are mounted in a casing connected with the usual traction wheels 2, 3 in such a way that one or other brush only is used, the other remaining idle and raised according to the position of a handle of the sweeper. The handle 6 has a yoke 6<a> pivoted in the casing. U-shaped links 11, 12 are pivoted to discs 13 on the collar members attached to the handle. The lower ends of the links 11, 12 are attached to lever members 14, 15 which are mounted on axles 5 of the traction wheels whereby they are capable of rocking. The outer ends of the levers carry bearings for the brushes 24, 25. Bearings 27 are cutaway to allow brushes to be renewed or replaced. Friction wheels 28, 29 are secured to the ends of journals 26. The friction wheels are kept in contact with the traction wheels by springs 30 at the ends of levers 14, 15. By pulling the levers 14, 15 outwardly the journals 26 are freed together with the brushes. Cams 33, 34 fixed to the casing 1 render one or other brush 25 inoperative by separating it from the friction wheel 3 as at the right of the Figure when the handle is rocked to depress the inner end of the lever 15 which raises the brush 25. A reversal of the handle raises the brush 24 rendering it inoperative and the brush 25 operative. The dustpan 35 has lips 36 which rest on the top of the casing and has a bottom 38 with upturned ends near the brushes to collect the dirt. A partition endway in the dustpan 35 prevents dirt from the operating brush being thrown against the idle brush. A handle 42 is provided on the top of the dustpan and a comb is provided for removing hair and fluff from the hard brush 24.
