Abstract
411,107. Marine flares and smokeproducing floats. GOOLDEN, A. C., JAMES, F., and DICK, J. S., Research Department, Woolwich Arsenal, London. Nov. 29, 1932, No. 33823. [Class 9 (ii).] A marine flare or smokeproducing float, intended especially for dropping for aircraft for navigation' purposes, is provided with an expansible buoyancy chamber such as a fabric bag which is filled with gas generated when the device drops in water. As shown, a canister a containing calcium phosphide is fitted with an expansible buoyancy chamber in the form of an inner fabric bag c surrounded by an outer fabric bag d. Before the device is dropped, a seal b is torn off by a string e passing out at the top of the bag c. And when the device falls in water, phosphine is generated and expands the bag c, causing the device to rise to the surface. The phosphine then escapes through a hole h near the bottom of the bag c into the outer bag d, from which it escapes by a funnel f at the top where it ignites spontaneously. The upper part of the bag d is made of wool or other material which is not inflammable or not readily combustible ; and the bottom of the bag is provided with an outlet g.
