Abstract
419,011. Dowels. STORM, R. W., 2500, Park Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 20, 1933, No. 35809. [Class 89 (ii).] A metal spline or dowel 12 for use in connecting wood flooring elements 10 is adapted to engage in grooves in the end faces of a plurality of elements and is provided with teeth 13, which are inclined to the surface of the spline and are so arranged that a plurality of teeth engages each element. One course of elements 10, which may be in tongued and grooved engagement, is first positioned on the floor, and a spline 12 is driven into the aligned grooves in the ends of the elements, and the next course of elements is then laid so that the grooved end faces of these elements may be driven on to the spline. The teeth 13 may be provided on one or both faces of the spline. Alternate teeth or groups of teeth may be inclined in opposite directions, and oppositely-inclined teeth may be provided on both faces of the spline. The spline may be of T-cross-section with the teeth provided on the horizontal flange, and such a spline is positioned with the vertical web extending either upwardly or downwardly. The teeth may be provided only towards each side of the spline so as to leave a central portion adapted to support a brass angle member 24 disposed in the joint as shown in Fig. 4. Alternatively, the joint may be fitted above the spline with a flat brass strip or a member of T-section having its horizontal flange disposed in the surface of the floor.
