Abstract
418,838. Switching systems for consuming devices. FERRANTI, Ltd., Hollinwood, and BUTTERFIELD, W. V., The Bungalow, Old Lane, Grasscroft, near Oldham, both in Lancashire. June 8, 1933, No. 16444. [Class 38 (iv).] A thermal switch con trolling an electric water heater has auxiliary means controlled from the power supply statior for opening the switch and maintaining it oper during the peak loac period. As shown in Fig. 1, the switch comprises a bimetallic strip a carrying at its free end a contact b co-operating with a fixed contact c, the circuit to the water heater being broken at the contacts b, c when a predetermined temperature is reached. Arranged alongside the thermal strip a is a resistance g on a mica strip f, the resistance being connected through terminals h, i to the power station. During the peak load period, the circuit to the resistance g is energized as by a time switch and the thermal strip a is heated to break the water heater circuit. In a modification, Fig. 3, the thermal strip a carries an armature j which is attracted by a solenoid k energized through terminals h, i during the peak load period.
