Abstract
418,134. Opening and conveying cotton &c. SACO-LOWELL SHOPS, 147, Milk Street, Boston, U.S.A. March 16, 1933, No. 8048. Convention date, April 4, 1932. [Class 120 (i).] In a method of handling cotton and similar fibrous material which consists in beating the material, conveying it from the beater in a stream of air, separating it from said air stream, and filtering the air stream subsequently to said separation, the air is humidified prior to being brought into contact with the fibrous material and is re-used in the handling of additional fibrous material. Thus the warmed and humidified air in a room can be used in the machines in that room and can be returned to the room after filtering. In the arrangement shown cotton is delivered from the opening room by a pneumatic conveyer 3 and a belt conveyer 2 to two picker systems A, B. Each system comprises a supply hopper 5 feeding the cotton automatically to the beater unit 6 of a breaker unit and a condenser 7 which discharges the cotton to a hopper feeder 9. The feeder 9 delivers the cotton to the beater 10 of a finisher lapper including a condenser section 12. Cotton is carried away from the beater 6 by the current of air induced by a blower 16 and drawn into the machine through a grating 15. After the air has been separated in the condenser from the cotton the air current passes through a pipe 20 to a filter 21 from which the air is discharged again into the room. Pipes 22, 23 lead from the condensers 12 of the beaters 10 to other filters 24, 25 also discharging into the room. Each filter is preferably of the kind described in Specification 418,195, [Group XXVIII], in which the filtering is done by a highly pervious layer built up of the fibres carried by the air stream and trapped between double wire screens of the filter. The air stream is periodically stopped to allow the filter to clear itself. The air used in the opener room may be discharged in the picker room and vice versa.
