Abstract

In the production of sodium or potassium nitrate from the corresponding chlorides and nitric acid in the presence of lead oxychloride with regeneration by lime of the lead chloride precipitated in the reaction, the crude solution of nitrate obtained is treated with an alkali, or with an alkaline-earth such as lime to free it from dissolved lead and the lead oxychloride precipitated is filtered off. The mother liquor remaining after crystallizing the alkali nitrate, after addition of the alkali chloride required for the next cycle and preferably also in presence of some lead oxychloride, is treated with sulphuric acid to eliminate calcium as sulphate. Nitric acid and regenerated lead oxychloride are then added for the production of more alkali nitrate. The whole or a part of the lead chloride precipitated in the reaction is dissolved in calcium chloride solution with or without calcium acetate and sulphuric acid equivalent to the amount of oxychloride present added, the calcium sulphate formed carrying down impurities which are filtered off. All the lead chloride is then converted to oxychloride for re-use by means of lime. Purification of lead chloride need not be affected at each cycle, particularly if an excess of chloride be maintained in circulation in the cycle.
