Abstract

403,473. Regulating fuel and air supply to furnaces. McKEAN, J. G., Westerhill, Mount Vernon, Lanarkshire, and JONES, R. F., 238, Auldhouse Road, Newlands, Glasgow. Aug. 23, 1932, No. 23561. [Class 51 (i).] In liquid-fuel burning plant for furnaces .in which an air admission valve and a fuel valve are controlled automatically by the pressure of the liquid fuel from the discharge side of the fuel supply pump, the air and fuel valves are mechanically independent and the air admission valve is provided with a load which is less than and entirely independent of the load on the fuel valve. In one form, Fig. 1, the spindle 7 of the air valve 8 located in a conduit 9, extends through the wall of the conduit and carries a pinion 6 meshing with a rack 5 on a rod 1 carrying pistons 2 and 3 operating in a cylinder 4. The piston 3 is loaded by a spring 10 while the piston 2 is subjected to the pressure of the liquid fuel, the discharge side of the fuel supply pump being connected by an inlet 16 with a chamber 15 bounded at the sides by a collapsable wall 14. In a modified form, Fig. 2, the cylinder is provided with a separate compartment 22, 22<1> for the piston 2, one side of the piston being'connected at 16 to the pump discharge and the other side at 23 to the suction side of the pump to allow for the return of any fuel which passes the piston. In further modifications, the two pistons 2 and 3 operate in separate spaced cylinders and the air valve may be in the form of an annular or circular hit-and-miss valve connected to the rod 1 by a pin and slot device. Where the fuel is drawn from a tank 31, Fig. 5, having a non-return valve 32, a bellows 34 is provided in the line 29 leading to the air valve controlling cylinder to accommodate the oil displaced by the piston 2 on the closing of the air valve.
