403,459. Portable grinding and polishing machine for stone &c. CASSIE, F. B., 600, King Street, Aberdeen. July 14, 1932, No. 19890. [Class 60.] A portable electrically driven grinding, polishing, or surfacing machine for treating the surface of stone, marble, granite &c., for example, floors, comprises a stand 5 carrying a vertical pillar 7 upon which is mounted a rotatable carriage 8 resting on a thrust collar 9 adjustable vertically on the pillar and clamped by a pin 10. On the carriage are pairs of rollers 11, 12 spaced to receive between them a pair of parallel bars 13 ; the rollers 12 are mounted eccentrically on a spindle 16, whereby, by rotation of the spindle, the space between the rollers may be varied. The bars are connected by a stay 14 and a handle 15, and carry near the handle an electric motor 23 with a vertical shaft 24 driving, through gearing, a tool spindle 28 carrying, by a universal joint 30, a grinding &c. tool 33. A weight 34 is slidable on the bars 13, or a spring may be fitted, to vary the pressure of the tool on the work. In operation the bars 13 may be swung up and down, to an extent limited by the setting of the rollers 12, and moved transversely of the carriage 8 ; the motor and tool may be adjustable along the bars 13. In a modification, the pillar is mounted on a base supported by castors, and the bars supporting the motor and tool are pivoted on the carriage ; the motor and tool are adjustable along the bars, and an adjustable weight also is carried by the bars. The machine also may be adapted for treating walls.
