Abstract
<PICT:0403097/III/1> <PICT:0403097/III/2> In connection with a chamber or cabin for protection against toxic gases, such gases as carbon monoxide, capable of combining with oxygen in the presence of spongy platinum or the like, are detected in the external atmosphere by the rise in temperature of an indicator comprising a U-tube 36 Fig. 12 with parallel or divergent limbs 41 set horizontally or vertically in plate 37 bolted with interposed packing 43 over an aperture in the cabin wall. One limb 41 contains the catalyst 40 retained by a lip 39. Caps 44 protect the appliance when not in use. Instead of a U-tube a rectangular or cylindrical tube closed at one end and having a longitudinal partition may be employed. A detector for phosgene comprises a tube 59, Fig. 17, with an open end 62 projecting through the wall of the cabin, having screw jointed thereto a glass tube 49 surrounded by a metal casing 51 with diametrically opposed elongated windows 55. Rotatable on the casing 51 is a casing 53, closed at the bottom and having windows 56 adapted to register when required with the windows 55. The tube 49 contains aniline which in the presence of phosgene deposit white crystals which are observed as a cloudiness in the liquid. Between observations casing 53 is rotated to screen the aniline from the action of light.
